Can youth programming bring more members to your club? It did at Newtown Athletic & Aquatic Club, after it instituted its NAC Girls Club. The club successfully challenges teenage girls to enjoy fitness and start living a healthy lifestyle early in life. Since most exercise equipment is designed for the average adult, young people aren’t physically prepared for the adult health club. Special programming is rarely geared toward adolescents, and teenagers are too old for childcare and too young for adult strength training. But with the right music, guest lecturers and instructors, youth program director Andrea Biernbaum maintains that the girls are comfortable, enthusiastic and gradually preparing for the transition to adult health clubs. Doctors in the Austin area may be writing more prescriptions for exercise thanks to BodyBusiness Health & Fitness. While health care providers know that many of their patients could benefit from exercise, most do not have a referral program with a quality fitness club. So BodyBusiness held a three-day open-house for doctors, physical therapists and chiropractors to promote its referral system. If you are already keeping food and exercise logs, continue to do so. If you stopped self-monitoring, it may be time to return to this valuable habit. Research has consistently found this to be one of the best modifiers of behavior. For example, Fisher and colleagues found that individuals who kept food logs and then discontinued this process during a three-week period gained significantly more weight than those who continued to monitor their food intake and exercise. Time away. Moms, you love those cute little munchkins, but enough is enough, right? Good moms need a break. You can actually be a better mom if you get some time to yourself. Use the kids’ daddy time, swap with a neighbor, hire a teen you trust to baby-sit or check to se if your health club has a supervised children’s play area. Use your alone time to exercise. Even though exercise can be exhausting to a person suffering from CFIDS/FM, it is important to encourage at least a minimum of exercise at least several times a week. Walking is an excellent and safe exercise for children with limited energy. Start with short walks and monitor how well the child does. Even a five-minute walk can be beneficial.
